But the first thing we did in the morning was to use the beautiful weather and visit the Tawhai Falls, which apparently were also a film set for the LoTR-movie.
Unfortunately we don't know in which scene that would have been... We'd be glad for any informative commentaries on that!
The way down to Wellington was quite far and so we didn't do a lot of sight-seeing along the road.
Arriving in Wellington we found the city to be surprisingly beautiful and very clean. It is really a worthy capital. We entered the huge "Te Papa Tongawera National Museum of New Zealand" which is free. It is really as big as its name is long and shows several different exhibitions. You could easily spend a day in it.
But also the parks and the harbour are really beautiful and there seemed to be an inviting nightlife.
Today we took the ferry which took us to the south island. It is said to be one of the most beautiful ferry tracks for it leads through the stunning Marlborough Sounds.
It is also a quite windy trip. The Cook Passage lies on the Latitude 40° where the "roaring forties" blow. These strong winds are tunneled between the two islands and get therefore even stronger.
It was bloody freezing! |
From Picton we drove on to Nelson. The way leads along the curvy Queen Charlotte Drive which passes along the borders of the Sounds. Here we could find heaps of the silver fern which is New Zealand's national plant.

Hey guys! Uuuu, I'm looking forward to your travel reports from the South Island :) And stop talking about fern, please ;)
Check this out, this is all I've found:
"After another 4 kilometres there is a 20 minute walk to the Tawhai Falls, where the tree-lined river tumbles over a ledge of lava into a rock pool reminiscent of Henneth Annûn." I don't know what Henneth Annûn is supposed to be, but whatever. Maybe Michèle knows more ;)
But check this site out, I think it's awesome :P

And then I found this on LOTR-Wikipedia:
"Henneth Annûn, also called the Window of the Sunset, or Window on the West, was a hidden refuge of Gondorian rangers in the northern part of Ithilien along the Ephel Duath, the Mountains of Shadow. The waterfall cascading over the cliff-face had originally run through the cave itself, but was altered to flow over one of the entrances, giving Henneth Annûn its name. There are two entrances into the cave system- one being the route through which Samwise Gamgee and Frodo were led, and the other being the window itself.
HistoryEdit History sectionEdit
Like all of the other hidden refuges of Gondor in Ithilien, Henneth Annûn was created by the Steward Ecthelion I circa TA 2900 in response to Ithilien being desolated by the incursions of the orcs from Mordor. Henneth Annûn was the longest-lasting of all of the refuges in Ithilien. During the War of the Ring, Faramir, son of the Steward of Gondor, Denethor II, made it his base of operations. Caught in Ithilien, Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee were taken there to be questioned by Faramir. Requiring the utmost security, the ring-bearer and his servant were blindfolded until arrival at the lair.
Gollum found the Forbidden Pool by accident while he was diving for fish. The penalty for coming to Henneth Annûn without permission was death. However, Frodo convinced Faramir to spare Gollum, and he was brought to the cave blindfolded also.
The refuge's garrison left just after the Ring-bearer and was used to hold the west half of Osgiliath against the forces of Minas Morgul."
I hope this helps :P
Bisous.

Ah, Carmen did all the work, nothing left to say but enjoy the rest of your trip! :-)
